Informix 9i has had the TAPEDEV parameter set to /mnt/AUS/test using onmonitor. The suggested ontape format is:

ontape -s -L 0 -d

However, when run on Solaris 9 v890 it produces:

$ ontape -s -L 0 -d
invalid argument
ontape
usage:
{ -a  |
  -c  |
  -l  |
  -p  |
  -r  [-D DBspace_list] |
  -s  [-L archive_level] [-A database_list] [-B database_list]
      [-N database_list] [-U database_list]  }

-a Automatic backup of logical logs
-c Continuous backup of logical logs
-l Logical restore
-p Physical restore for HDR
-r Full restore DBspaces/BLOBspaces as listed
-s Archive full system
-A set the following database(s) to ansi logging
-B set the following database(s) to buffered logging
-N set the following database(s) to no logging
-U set the following database(s) to unbuffered logging

Program over.

Q1: Why does it not appear to know about the -d option

When setting the archive device via onmonitor it provides settings for block size and tape length, since I'm using a muti-TB NAS I'd like to set this to a real world reasonable size instead of the 4G tape default.

Q2: Does setting the archive dir above to something other than /dev/null over-ride the settings in tape size

I've got a primary application that is running a backup w/ TAPEDEV=/dev/null and parameters set via their script so it backs up to a SAN once a day. We'd like to do diffs. Since I want to run my secondary b/u such that I get a level 0 once a day and a level 1 b/u every 4 hours being able to dynamically change from/to the two parameter sets is pretty critical. onmonitor is not really condusive running in a wrapper.

Q3: Anyone got an exemplar of expect or other method (e.g. >>EOF) to run a crontab such that I can run my secondary b/u w/o conflict with the applications b/u?
