It's that time of month again for Hacking Society Austin to get together and chat about whatever strikes our fancy, hopefully we'll have some updates on our various projects as well. As usual we'll be meeting at the HEB Central Market Cafte on N. Lamar, between 38th and 45th. We'll start at 7pm and the way to find the table is to look for the red covered copy of "Applied Cryptography" on the table. We'll most likely meet on the covered patio. The next TRG Maker SIG will be the evening of Thursday, August 13. We promise an interesting evening of hands-on technology enjoyment. Our current schedule is: 7-8pm Soldering Session #3: recap basic soldering and introduction to PCB soldering techniques. We have some soldering tools, but if you have your own please bring them! This is the next to last soldering session. After this are two sessions on how to use a meter. 8-8:30pm Regular Robot Group business 8-10pm Lego Mindstorms Session #3: Making the rover go... The goal is to have our first rovers programmed to travel a fixed path. No sensors or other interaction is planned. The basic path should be a square. A basic pseudo-code description: task main() define repeat=4 define distance=? define angle=90 for i=1 to repeat, i+ { subroutine goforward(distance) subroutine turnright(angle) } If we get everybody to this point we'll add the bump sensors and modify the above code to allow the rovers to wander around and take suitable action on bumping objects. The step after this will be a down looking sensor to determine black or white surface color. With this we can modify the 'bump' code so the rovers can participate in a 'robot sumo' contest in a ring. I will bring the competition ring for testing. We -suggest- that you consider making the navigation, bump, and floor color sensor routines be seperate tasks controlled by a master task. If you have other projects, demonstrations, or presentations please feel free to come and participate. This is an 'open mike' event in that respect. The next Maker SIG meeting after this will be August 27. Hope you all can make it, and don't forget to pass the word around please!!! -- -- -- -- -- Venimus, Vidimus, Dolavimus James Choate jameschoate at austin.rr.com james.choate at twcable.com 512-657-1279 www.ssz.com http://www.twine.com/twine/1128gqhxn-dwr/solar-soyuz-zaibatsu http://www.twine.com/twine/1178v3j0v-76w/confusion-research-center Adapt, Adopt, Improvise -- -- -- -- From jameschoate at austin.rr.com Thu Aug 6 13:07:29 2009 From: jameschoate at austin.rr.com (jameschoate at austin.rr.com) Date: Thu, 6 Aug 2009 20:07:29 +0000 Subject: APM: Some commentary on (P)RNGs Message-ID: <20090806200729.P0D6Q.449441.root@hrndva-web11-z01> http://groups.google.com/group/sci.math/browse_thread/thread/93791533c2b047eb/873ffe56eb092261 -- -- -- -- -- Venimus, Vidimus, Dolavimus James Choate jameschoate at austin.rr.com james.choate at twcable.com 512-657-1279 www.ssz.com http://www.twine.com/twine/1128gqhxn-dwr/solar-soyuz-zaibatsu http://www.twine.com/twine/1178v3j0v-76w/confusion-research-center Adapt, Adopt, Improvise -- -- -- -- From jameschoate at austin.rr.com Thu Aug 6 13:10:36 2009 From: jameschoate at austin.rr.com (jameschoate at austin.rr.com) Date: Thu, 6 Aug 2009 20:10:36 +0000 Subject: APM: Perl Regex Interactive Tutorial Message-ID: <20090806201036.UVTF8.449492.root@hrndva-web11-z01> http://www.perlfect.com/articles/regextutor.shtml -- -- -- -- -- Venimus, Vidimus, Dolavimus James Choate jameschoate at austin.rr.com james.choate at twcable.com 512-657-1279 www.ssz.com http://www.twine.com/twine/1128gqhxn-dwr/solar-soyuz-zaibatsu http://www.twine.com/twine/1178v3j0v-76w/confusion-research-center Adapt, Adopt, Improvise -- -- -- -- From jameschoate at austin.rr.com Fri Aug 7 11:29:02 2009 From: jameschoate at austin.rr.com (jameschoate at austin.rr.com) Date: Fri, 7 Aug 2009 18:29:02 +0000 Subject: APM: TRG Maker SIG - Thu. The SMT Rework Station was ordered and it is supposed to be in this week. This means we'll be able to work on surface mount technology at the next, and last, soldering skill session. This time slot will be followed by two sessions of how to use a multimeter, both analog and digital. 8:00 - 8:30 Normal TRG Business 8:30 - 10:00 Lego Mindstorms will be getting our bots rolling and programmed to 'draw' a square on a flat surface. We'll then add bump switches and work with responses to same. If we have time I'd like to get a downward looking sensor for doing black/white recognition for future projects (eg line following & sumo combat). I'll bring the combat ring so people can see where we'll be playing with the bots at the meeting in two weeks. I also have two RCX bricks that those who don't have a Mindstorm set are welcome to use to participate. I'll start the 8:30 session with a short (~15m) history of Lego Mindstorms. Proposed Future Sessions: These are some projects I'm working on for CRC and would like to demo to TRG during a maker SIG in late Nov/Dec. If you have other topics please let me know and I'll see what I can do about building something up around them. - An Incomplete History of RPN Scientific Calculators: I've got several HP and a couple of Soviet RPN calculators so people can not only learn a little bit about them but also do a little programming. I have a large library of software for all the HP scientific calculators. Feel free to bring your own RPN calculator to share. For those who are intimidated about learning to program, these friendly little machines can be very helpful in pinning down the basic algorithmic techniques. (1 hour) - Handling High Voltage: The next project I'm starting in about a week is a Jacob's Ladder. This would be a very good tool to introduce some basics about high voltage and safe techniques to work around it. (1 hour) Please let others know of the TRG Maker SIG, and feel free to come and work on your own projects. We consider it an 'open microphone' event. We'll be having the last of the soldering sessions and will follow up in the 7-8pm slot with a 'How to use a Multimeter' for Sept. That session will be a review of all we've looked at over the previous three and surface mount techniques. Regarding the Lego Mindstorms, we ended up with four vehicles for the three RCX controllers. We have a hexapod and two wheeled vehicles. One of them is a little two wheeler that like to pop wheelies (Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth would be proud). Eric also has a basic framework build that we'll be building on. Message-ID: <20090821212733.2NOWZ.21614.root@hrndva-web28-z01> I recently stumbled onto a line of small handheld computers unique to Japan due to their use of a programming standard called CASL. It is used for qualifying exams in their schools. In particular I was looking at the Casio VX-4 (FX-870P) as well as the Sharp PC-850V, Sharp, E500S, and the Casio AI 1000 (which ships with Lisp). All these little computers have BASIC but also C and assembly support (the AI 1000 has Prolog as well). I figured if they're that common there should be some code hanging about that kids had written and shared.
