Message-ID: <43C5EA91.6000601@perltraining.com.au> G'day Daniel, Dan and anyone else subscribed to these very quiet lists. I can see that Auckland PM and Hawkesbay PM have survived the latest round of pm.org eliminations, so I assume that there must be some life still in these groups. If so, I'd like you to consider visiting PerlNet -- the Australian and New Zealand Perl Portal (it's a wiki) and contributing to your group's webpage. Being a wiki, this invitation is open to everyone, not just group leaders. Reasons for why your group might want to get involved in PerlNet can be found at: http://perl.net.au/wiki/PerlNet:PerlNet_and_User_Groups Your pages can be found at: http://perl.net.au/wiki/Auckland_Perl_Mongers http://perl.net.au/wiki/HawkesBay_Perl_Mongers Sydney Perl Mongers has taken this opportunity to redirect their pm.org account to their wiki page. This means that all of Sydney Perl Mongers can keep their "homepage" up to date. Perhaps that might help you as well. We (Perl Training Australia) have a number of clients in Auckland, working for Optus, Teradata and the Manukau City Council, so there definately *are* Perl programmers in Auckland. I've invited these lovely folk to join in on the wiki, although many of them still appear to be on holiday at the moment. If I can suggest that you put together something convincing on the Auckland wiki page http://perl.net.au/wiki/Auckland_Perl_Mongers it might be possible that we'll be able to work together to make Auckland Perl Mongers a reality. I've given you a few things to think about. The important step in building a user group is to advertise it. I'll do our best to help you here on the PerlNet side of things, but that won't be enough to get you sufficient critical mass to get meetings happening. People won't join a user group that doesn't appear to be active. So you'll need to launch Auckland PM. To do this, contact similar user groups in your area (to find the Perl programmers who are going along because they don't have a local PM group): Auckland Linux Users ( http://auckland.linux.net.nz/ , Auckland PHP Users Group, perhaps the Waikato Linux Users Group, NZ.NET User Group, Auckland Macintosh Society, Amiga Auckland Inc, Auckland MySQL Meetup (http://mysql.meetup.com/94/e), Auckland Web Design Meetup Group (http://webdesign.meetup.com/108/). to let them know that you're starting up Auckland PM and you invite them to join. Send an announcement to use.perl.org as well. You'll need to update your pm.org page as well. All the best, Jacinta -- ("`-''-/").___..--''"`-._ | Jacinta Richardson | `6_ 6 ) `-. Welcome Evan, In my experience Perl Monger lists are generally quiet, regardless of the level of the group's activity. Melbourne Perl Mongers for example has monthly meetings, but probably averages 5 messages a month (usually all meeting organisation), Sydney Perl Mongers is the same. It's not just a Southern Hemisphere thing either, because SPUG (Seattle PM) is much the same. In fact Wellington has the most active PM mailing list that I'm subscribed to. >From time to time Perl questions are asked, but not very often. I suspect that this is because there are so many better places to ask questions. For example, PerlMonks (www.perlmonks.org) for general questions, or language struct specific lists like the DBI mailing lists, for specialised questions. Don't let this stop you from bring up such questions here though. Perl Training Australia gets a fair few enquiries about Perl in Auckland, but not yet enough to make it efficient for us to offer general enrollment training over there. We've still done training in and near Auckland a bunch of times, but only for corporate bookings. It's one of our policies to support local Perl Monger groups, so we do what we can to achieve that. Where possible that means giving talks at the local user group when we do training in the region. In other cases, I try to offer assistance in getting the group off the ground. If you have some ideas of what you'd like to get out of Auckland Perl Mongers, let us know, and perhaps we can all work together to achieve that.
