I'm replying to the list because maybe some other opinions could be
useful.

It depends how many users you expect.

I use mysql for the OpenECG members' database and for a few other
things. With Perl's DBI module I find it very easy to use and I'm quite
happy with it.

If you use DBI you could start out with a flat file and then move to
mysql if it becomes necessary. That's very easy with DBI if you're only
doing standard SQL stuff.
