From fgd at alaska.net Sat May 1 01:13:44 1999 From: fgd at alaska.net (Fielder George Dowding) Date: Wed Aug 4 23:56:54 2004 Subject: Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy!!! Message-ID: <372A9B98.F6B23373@alaska.net> Greetings fellow apm's (Anchorage Perl Mongers)! I am hooked! I just did the monthly thing with the Mabel T. Caverly newsletter, and I am really tickled how my first real Pearl script eased my task. It still takes me a couple (about three and a half this time) of futzing in MS Publisher to get the newsletter in a reasonable shape to publish to the web. In the past it took another two hours or more in vi or emacs, depending on the number of pages, to set up the html to present the images, provide navigation, and get the update date and title correct. Last month I spent the time writing a Perl script to do the job. The pay off was this month - I am done almost before I started. I still have to do the redirect index tomorrow by hand. So that is my next project in Perl - to have a script on the site change the redirect based on the date (new month) and whether or not there is an "index.html" file in the target month's subdirectory. It doesn't sound to difficult, but right now as "Johnny Newcomb", I don't know where to start. Cheerio for now! -- Fielder George Dowding dba Iceworm Enterprises fgd@alaska.net iceworm@customcpu.com 909 Chugach Way Lot 35, Anchorage, Alaska, US 99503-5667 =============================================================== Mailing list info: If at any time you wish to (un|re)subscribe to the list send the request to majordomo@hfb.pm.org. It's definitely a magazine worth subscription, in spite of my work appearing there. They usually do "themed" issues, and each theme is well-covered. You can check out upcoming issues; their web-site is www.samag.com . Message-ID: Greetings: Quick question for you Perl/MySQL gurus: we're a Perl script that creates HTML statistical reports from Apache log files (don't bother asking about it, the script's crap, written by some other nitwit, and is being replaced). We're in the process of rolling our own replacement, but in the interim, we've modified the script to extract the applicable data from MySQL, via DBI. Here's the problem--on a query that returns around 600,000 applicable log entries (the log entry has already been separated into separate columns in the table), memory usage of the script zooms over 150MB, and doesn't release it, even after continuing onto a much smaller query. It is possible that the memory leak is in the original script, but are there any known issues with DBI/MySQL-DBD? Just curious, since at one time, we were exploring using the Interbase RDBMS, but the Perl module for it (non-DBI) leaks like a sieve. BTW, who's using MySQL with tables on the order of gigabytes? Anyone have to handle trying to squeeze indices on +3 million record tables into that damnable 2GB file size limit? --Arthur Corliss Bolverk's Lair -- http://www.odinicfoundation.org/arthur/ "Live Free or Die, the Only Way to Live" -- NH State Motto =============================================================== Mailing list info: If at any time you wish to (un|re)subscribe to the list send the request to majordomo@hfb.pm.org. If it doesn't free the memory after using "finish()", then chances are it's a DBD leak. - Tony =============================================================== Mailing list info: If at any time you wish to (un|re)subscribe to the list send the request to majordomo@hfb.pm.org. Greetings: Quick question for you Perl/MySQL gurus: we're a Perl script that creates HTML statistical reports from Apache log files (don't bother asking about it, the script's crap, written by some other nitwit, and is being replaced). I'm even closing down the entire db handle and reopening with each query, but still no go. Message-ID: Greetings, Perl Mongers & Linux'ers: We've finally ramped up enough interest and participation to pull of our first, very-low-key ;-) meeting. We invite everyone to participate, both for those who are current Perl hacks, and those Linux users entertaining thoughts of delving into *nix programming. Obviously, since everyone on the list is also on the AKLUG list, there will be a lot of Linux-oriented examples going around. What's on the agenda? We plan on having a few book reviews on some good Perl texts, as well as possibly (?) a quick intro or two into some of the more popular modules. In general, though, this is more a prime opportunity to get to know one another, plan some activities for the group, and discuss the general direction the group will be taking. The place: Computer Electronics, across from Sam's, by the Northway Mall. The time: 7:00 PM, on May 22nd (Saturday) I want to thank Jan Zumwalt for providing the space for the group's meeting. :-) --Arthur Corliss =============================================================== Mailing list info: If at any time you wish to (un|re)subscribe to the list send the request to majordomo@hfb.pm.org. Let me run down a quick list of what we've decided, though: 1) We will attempt to have monthly meetings, very likely at Jan's, since he has computers networked and running Linux for immediate tinkering. Hopefully, the construction at that end of the store will be done, soon. 2) Web site: We will attempt to implement an event calendar w/ meeting agendas, a one-liner database, script archives, member databases, etc. Some will have both public as well as private areas. 3) What we'd like to do on future meetings is more book reviews, as well as an intro to at least one module each meeting. Hopefully, if we can get the class transcribed, we can put them up on the website as well. :-) Outside of that, we did do a bit of talking, some jeering and heckling ;-), Mike Fowler gave a quick review of a good Perl book whose title consistently escapes me, and so on. Good time. :-) I didn't get out of there until 9:30. Count on coming next time!
