From xsawyerx at gmail.com Wed Jan 14 07:36:24 2015 From: xsawyerx at gmail.com (Sawyer X) Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2015 16:36:24 +0100 Subject: [AmsterdamX-pm] AmsterdamX.pm meeting: Tuesday, January 20th (NEXT WEEK!) Message-ID: This January we're getting lots of amazing speakers and great talks. Don't miss it! Please also fill in the following form if you intend to come: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3WHXKQP *In a nutshell:* Date: 20th, January Tuesday. Time: 18:30 - 20:30 (theoretically) Location: Booking.com, Herengracht 597, Beijing room on 5th floor. *Talks:* *Stevan Little - Big world, Little Stevan* Revealing truths (without revealing), exposed secrets (without exposing), promises and lies, love and deceit, actions and consequences, mystery and brutal honesty, one word juxtapositioned against another. Will it be YET ANOTHER FREAKIN' MOP? Will it be a new language I enjoyed working with? Is it The 10 Best Coding Practices of 2014 or The Worst, Most-Shared BuzzFeed Articles I will be covering? The subject of this talk is going to surprise you. Hell, it's going to surprise me! Join me (or don't) to hear magical stories of enchanted youths fooled by enigmatic and theatrical descriptions in order to attend a still-vaguely-themed talk of a questionable topic. I will also apologize for not providing talk descriptions ahead of time which made Sawyer X write mine. *Borislav Nikolov (jackdoe) - Extreme (Elastic)Search* This is a story about search, distributed systems, complexity, tackling extreme conditions, and about which decisions we made at Booking.com to make it work. P.S.: The talk has almost nothing to do with Perl. *Mickey Nasriachi - A killer API for a killer feature* CPAN is Perl's killer feature. The information available in CPAN is massive, but without a proper API, it's difficult to work with. MetaCPAN provides this API, and MetaCPAN::Client provides the ability to work with the API in a sophisticated and comfortable way. *Sawyer X - Modern web scrapping* Web scrapping is fun. It makes data accessible, works around API limits, and makes us feel like gods. I'll show Web::Query, a module I joyfully started using recently in my scrapping, and few examples on stuff I've scrapped with it. *Unabridged:* You've probably heard of the Perl Mongers meetings, where fellow Perl (and non-Perl) programmers can get together to "talk shop", make fun of everything (including Perl), and have a good time. These meetings often have a few technical talks (which are usually light-hearted, and not necessarily - but likely - involve Perl). There are already Amsterdam.pm meetings. This is not about those. This is about AmsterdamX.pm. The talks can be a 5 minute tidbit about a cool module, or a 40 minute tutorial about some cool new (or old) software. *AmsterdamX.pm?* AmsterdamX.pm (Amsterdam eXpats Perl Mongers) is a new Perl Mongers group whose purpose is to optimize for expats. The major differences are: * use English; We might speak more than 50 languages, but we commonly speak only one. * Meeting early: we meet at 18:30, so you can come straight from work instead of having a long buffer time to the meeting. * Held at Booking.com, where most Perl expats in Amsterdam already work. This isn't to replace Amsterdam.pm, but to provide an additional group. It is only meant to supplement. *Why should I attend?* Here are a few reasons which might appeal to you: * You will improve your knowledge of Perl (and most likely other technologies) through the knowledge and experience of others. It's like a free course, with snacks! * You could give a talk and share your knowledge and experience. If you're going to YAPC to give a talk, this is great practice. * It's a wonderful chance to socialize. *How many talks, and how long are they?* Usually there will be 2-3 talks, ranging between 5 minutes (lightning) and 40 minutes (tutorial). *Is it just for Booking.com?* No. This isn't Booking.pm, this is AmsterdamX.pm. (also, Sparta!) This means that everyone is invited! We suggest that people register so we could have a good estimate of the people arriving. This will help with various things like optimized snack distribution, making sure reception knows of people arriving that don't have keys, making sure we get a proper room, etc. *Now I'm interested, what's the next step?* Please let us know by return email if you will be attending as well as the names of anyone you plan on bringing from outside of Booking.com. Then mark the date, time and place, and show up! See you there! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have a big booth with tuits, buttons, stickers, toy camels, brochures, books for sale and of course the largest library of Perl-books in the world and the big Perl camel. We have a nice devroom in the same building (K) as the booth, and we have made a very nice schedule with some famous speakers and some excellent topics. On Sunday we have two talks in the Languages track in J building, in the largest room of FOSDEM (1400 seats). Dana Jacobsen and Larry Wall will speak about Perl. On Friday night it is beer night at Delirium Caf?. It's mostly heavy beer. The place can hold a lot of people, but at some point it is full, the alley of the caf? will be full, and security will close off the alley, only allowing people in when other people leave. So if you go, don't go late. If you want to join us for dinner on Saturday (in La Porteuse d'Eau, we got 70 seats) and/or Sunday (La Becasse, we got 50 seats), please send me an email telling me which dinner(s) you want to join. You are expected to pay ? 20 for dinner, the rest will be sponsored. Also, don't forget to tell me any dietary requirements (vegan, vegetarian, or severe allergies that have to be taken into account, and maybe we can handle that). Only people who mailed me can join. https://wendyga.wordpress.com/2015/01/25/fosdem-perl-devroom-schedule-31jan2015-and-booth-31jan1feb2015/ Hope to see you in Brussels. Kind regards, Wendy van Dijk
