In-Reply-To: References: <52A25DEB.4080409@fairpoint.net> Message-ID: Albany mongers, I have no idea what the history of this group has been, so I realize I might be speaking out of turn or place, but I'd like to see this group do more. Out of all the languages I've used, perl is my favorite for its elegance, potential density, power, and sheer multitude of capable freely available modules. Even though I've been programming in perl for over 10 years, I can still find things that surprise me. Most recently, I found Rose::DB and anonymous closures, both of which enable a conceptual change for the better in the way you can approach problems. I'd like to meet with like-minded people on a monthly basis to share these surprises. I think its more fun to learn about things if you do it as a group. I'm talking presentations here people. I'm talking a projector and some preparation. Something to really make attendance worthwhile. I would propose a meeting to be made up of 3 twenty-minute sessions, and that we take turns. Sounds good. Here's some random thoughts on the matter though years of organising these things. 1. We'd need a venue. Normally this is office space in a friendly firm. I've also done this in pubs before, where a company sponsors the event by hiring a room that has a projector. Since I work from home now, I don't have much in the way to offer on this front. Patrick, I get the impression from stalking you on LinkedIn that you might be a single man-shop also. Do you have office space or do we need to seek further? 2. Regular is good, but how about we work on the first tech meet first, and then see how it goes from there?. If we were clever about it we could combine it with the social, i.e. do presentations and then go for a drink afterward. 3. I'm more than happy to present; I've got a bunch of stuff I'd love to talk about. Mark. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In-Reply-To: References: <52A25DEB.4080409@fairpoint.net> Message-ID: Mark, Giving it a trial run first sounds good; we can work on the recurrence later if all goes well. On timing, I'm thinking soon after an dinner early, which would nicely roll into a drink afterward, say starting around 6:30 and being out by 7:45? You've accurately surmised that I'm currently a single-man shop. My "office" doesn't have much in the way of space. As the group is called Albany Perl Mongers, I'd assume that the meeting should be in or near to Albany, and I'm also considering the availability of parking. I'm currently following up on a couple of leads: 1. The East Greenbush Library has two large rooms which can fit 90 people in one and 76 people in the other. The smaller of the two has a partition, to which they limit the meeting to 38, which seems to me more than enough. Its free and they even provide "audiovisual" equipment, which may mean a project. Also, parking is aplenty. 2. Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce in Troy has meeting rooms available, but I'm not yet sure of anything there such as hours, parking, room size and whether a projector could be used. I'll send an update when I get feedback from both. Does anyone have issues with either of these locations or the time suggestion, or better locations? It's a decent space, actually. Internet speed is serviceable, and the library staff and patrons leave us alone. I've been meaning to write the group to notify about the Tech Valley Tech-Group Holiday party. I'm glad that Jerry mentioned it. I'm already signed up, and it's been mentioned in a couple of the others that I'm involved with (Ruby, Cocoaheads, Mobile-Devs, and Ops groups, off the top of my head...). Presentations? Message-ID: <30040B8D-5111-48CF-94D6-A993379EFAF2@gmail.com> Fellow Mongers, I'd like to reserve a meeting room at the East Greenbush Library for us. I'm targeting the week of January 20-24. Please let me know which day(s) are possible for you that week, or if a week earlier or later is better. I haven't heard anything about the time I proposed, so I guess we'll go for 6:30 - 7:45. I'll organize the meeting space, and make sure a projector is there. Please let me know if you'd like to like to present anything you find interesting to the rest of us! Presentations can be anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes--please also give me an idea of how long you think you might want. -Pat Patrick Cronin Computer Lover Mobile: +1 518 248 7521 Email: oshihuna at gmail.com Skype: patrickcronin12061 P Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail / attachments -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
